Diverse Sunday newses
So Friday Night Lights has been renewed. I'm both relieved and excited--Season One was a near-perfect season of television, in my opinion, but there's so much more development possible for the characters and I'm glad we'll get to see that. If you're not already watching the show, I'd highly recommend catching up for season two. (kristiinthedark and norwich36, I am fluttering my eyelashes in your direction specifically! *g*)

There are rumours flying that Season 4 will be the last season of Battlestar Galactica. I'd kind of already resigned myself to that possibility.

Smallville fandom seems to have polarised (again! *yawn*) over 'Prototype' and although I stay well away from all the bitchiness on TWOP, the flickers I see of it on LJ sadden me. Particularly the slagging off of the female characters. I couldn't be more delighted with Lois and Lana (in particular) right now. In fact, all the characters are exactly where I want them to be in their arcs at this point in time. So my tolerance for the bitchiness is even lower than usual.

For those of you who enjoyed Prototype, I recommend literaryll's very squeeful illustrated review. Also, clari_clyde has some interesting spec on Lionel.

And any Oliver fans who haven't seen obsessive24's Freestyler vid are missing out!

Question for the SV fen: is there/was there a haiku challenge somewhere? Methinks yes, but I forget where.

Yeah, me too. Considering how crazy I am for that show, I'm strangely zen about it. I conclude that I must have accepted it long ago.

Also, I forgot to mention that I saw "Prototype" and I thought it was really good. I especially loved the end scene between Lois and Tahmoh's character. People pick on Lois? That's sad to hear. She seemed feisty to me.

Bring on the FNL DVDs for summer viewing!

Yes, I'm crazily zen about it too. Maybe because I feel they are reaching the point where they need to wrap it up. I mean: Earth! We've seen Earth now!

Eeeee! \o/ Yay! I loved it. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. And yeah, there's a ridiculous amount of venom spewed at Lois--most markedly at TWOP (which is why I hate the place), where she is referred to as 'Nois'.

FNL DVDs--yes!! I'm sure you'll love it.

I really have to check out FNL this summer, everyone is so squeeful.

Ah fandom. The bitchiness is tiring me out. I love fandom, my life would be so much more boring if it weren't for TV shows and fandom, but sometimes I have a feeling that fandom is doing everything in it's power to ruin my enjoyment of the show. :) I'm actually looking forward to summer hiatus for once.

I get that feeling too sometimes. I just don't understand why people spend so much time hating. Just... move on!!! There are so many things to love in this world, why spend your time on hate?

Oh, yay! Another FNL fan! *twirls you* Yes, it's so real--that's definitely a big part of the attraction for me. The rawness in the acting performances is incredible. Later in the season there are a couple of deleted scenes (DELETED scenes!) that made me cry they were so moving.

Just say no to character bashing

First of all squeeage over FNL! I hope they were renewed for a full season and not just 13 eps. I look forward to getting the S1 DVDs of this show to catch a few eps that I missed, and to watch it with my son who really isn't able to follow too many shows because of school. He only makes time for SV on a regular basis. *proud*

Don't get me started on TWOP - the free-for-all arrogant one-upmanship in insulting anyone that's not Chloe that reigns over common civility over there turns my stomach. And it's allowed, which is even more unacceptable for a so-called moderated community, IMO. But I guess that's the point of "Without Pity." I'm just not a Without Pity kinda gal, I guess.

Glad to see you pimping the Prototype entry by literaryll . The sheer fannish joy and beauty of that entry made my week! With all the gripes we ALL occasionally have about the show, a post like that reinforces all the good tingly reasons why we ARE fans regardless of the bumps. Bottom line is - it feels GREAT to roll around and wallow in the love once in a while.
Can you tell I liked her entry a lot? *still wallowing*

I haven't heard which length yet, but I hope a full season. Rewatching with your son sounds wonderful. I'm dying for the DVDs too. The deleted material should be great judging by the few deleted scenes I've caught online.

*seconds* I can't go there. I haven't been able to go there for months--over a year? Occasionally friends send me links to comments made there so I get a feeling for what's going on and I... just... *shudders* It's not meta, it's a slanging match. There's a reason I stay on LJ. The trouble is also, I think, that the kind of culture that springs up over there is very self-reinforcing--the insults are condoned, so they're accepted as 'fact'. I just hate it when people don't allow others to have their own take on the show.

YES!! Exactly! Of course we all get frustrated with the show at times. (Even now, there's part of me that is grumbly that the Zoners have fallen into the background so much.) But I'm in fandom for the joy not the pain, and I'd rather focus on the good stuff. I will never understand why people spend their time hating rather than loving. If they're hating the show that much, move on. If they're not getting what they want from the show, but they still like the characters/universe, then go read fanfic/write fanfic/make something! Or just focus on what you do like. Don't spew venom over everyone else.

I don't know is that's the one you read about, but there's a little haiku challenge/contest over at the justtomwelling com. It's about Tom, and clarkscherry will give away a price to the winner. :D

As for your post, I never go to TWOP, I just can't stand the bitchiness there. There are some SV characters I don't like much, but I'd rather stay away from constant character bashing and really narrow minded views. Besides, some people are really disrespectful of others' opinions. I want to enjoy my fandom experience as much as possible so I try to avoid useless confrontations. I for one am not happy with SV season 6 but I understand that to much negativity ruins the watching experience for others, and for myself. I miss the times when watching the show was mostly a joyful experience!

Oh, maybe! I have a friend new to SV who is very good at these things. I will send her over! :-)

*nods* I very very rarely go to TWOP myself. I gave up ages ago because of the negativity and narrow-mindedness. It still saddens me to hear that it goes on there, but I stay on LJ for a reason.

I'm sorry to hear that. I have my own disappointments with the show as well, and while I've been happy overall with season 6 (though it didn't quite play out the way I expected), I definitely sympathise with the feeling of being let down sometimes, and I think it's very gracious of you to focus on the positives despite that and not to begrudge others their enjoyment.

Particularly the slagging off of the female characters. I couldn't be more delighted with Lois and Lana (in particular) right now.

GAH. The crap fans give Lois and Lana for behavior they overlook/rationalize in Chloe is one of the things I hate most about certain segments of Smallville fandom (*coughTWOPandKryptonSitecough*). The times Lana slept with Lex and Lois tried to sleep with Oliver were the worst. People were saying they should both move to Slutville without paying any mind to the fact that their angel Chloe had slept with a guy who apparently wasn't even her boyfriend. Hello, double standard much?

*nods* I concur. That double standard is ridiculous. Like the way Lois is considered to be objectified (and therefore dismisable) because of the way she dresses, but they're blind to Chloe's ridiculously inflated cleavage through much of Season 5. All the girls on this show are objectified--hell, all the guys are too! SV is thinly disguised porn. Get over it, people!
Nora Norwich: Lana when I'm badnorwich36 on May 13th, 2007 04:48 pm (UTC)
I really agree with you on the SV negativity front--I've actually seen Lana, Lois, Chloe and Martha bashing come out of this episode. *Headdesk* And yeah, I was bored and ventured onto TWOP, so I bear some responsibility, but it was also in a lot of reviews. It's the sort of thing that makes me wonder if enough people actually use the links at eat_crow to justify what collecting reviews does to my blood pressure.

And YAY for FNL being renewed. Do they have those eps on the website? Because my guess is that they won't release the DVDs until right before the next season starts, which probably won't give me enough time to watch before the next season starts.

literaryll's review is a thing of squeeful beauty.

Aiee!! Sheesh. Let me get guess... let's see--Martha: colluding with the enemy and abandonning her son? (aka the usual) Chloe: hmm... ok I am totally blanking on what she did that was in any way offensive... made coffee for her cousin? acted supportively as always? oh, hang on, lack of sympathy with Lana, maybe? Regardless, it's all nonsensical. Of course characters (or the writing of them) rub us up the wrong way occasionally, but there's a difference between being politely frustrated with that and expressing it by calling said characters 'whores', 'sluts' or 'useless wastes of space'. And when it's the female characters who repeatedly get harangued, the misogny alarm bells start to ring for me.

Do they have those eps on the website?
I will investigate for you! I think yes they do. I know they had a lot of deleted scenes up there.

Color me excited that Friday Night Lights got picked up for a new season. I've been on pins and needles waiting for this news. On the Smallville front does it sadden you in a way that there is such hatred of Lois over at the TWOP? I personally love her character and find it odd how people think she got shoehorned into investigating when the first time we see her she's doing just that with Chloe's "death". *sigh* I honestly go over there just to read the Welling thread LOL. Oh and I hadn't heard that season four might be BSG's last season. I'll have to ponder that.

Right! Her tenacity, personal initiative, and drive to uncover the 'truth' have been present since the very beginning. I don't know why anyone would be surprised that she's an investigative journalist. And in keeping with the other characters on the show, they've also shown that it's personal for Lois. She engages most when she's defending a friend or trying to get justice for someone. And that makes her such a great match for Clark.

I hadn't heard that season four might be BSG's last season. I'll have to ponder that.
There are conflicting reports. EJO has said yes it is, but then Eick said that EJO doesn't know what he's talking about. I think it's pretty likely though--I just get that vibe.

You're more than welcome! Everyone should watch your vids. They are shiny joyful love!

Friday Night Lights is about a small-town highschool American football team in Texas. It's got a strong ensemble cast and an original approach to production: they film on location and the actors ad lib a lot so the performances are very natural. The handheld camera work can be a bit shaky at times (especially early s1), but it's got a really intimate flavour. The stories centre more on the characters than the football, but each ep is built around a game or another major event for the team. It was a fascinating snapshot of small-town America, with its religion, racial and class tensions, and the kind of desperate obsession with football (all that pressure on those kids!).

I think it could be a good move for BSG too. I don't like the idea of them dragging it out for the sake of it, and I want them to have the chance to wrap it up properly and not just get axed!

I'm glad that you knew about the rumors about BSG S4. Didn't want to spoil you or anything. I can't say I'm exactly zen about it but something in me is resigned as well. I guess after thinking Katee was leaving and mentally preparing for that, nothing can really faze me now. I'll miss it, though.

It's the last great TV show for me in a line of really great shows. I can feel it, you know and that makes me sad. I kind of joined fandom on the tail end of things but I'm glad I did. I don't think I want to love another show the way I do BSG.

And now, I'm wary of shows with awesome first seasons. There are so many awesome first seasons. It's like having a casual relationship. I want a show I can settle down with and rely on to be consistently good for the long-term and not get cancelled.

You see why this is it for me. I get way too close to TV. :)

I'll miss it too. Though I'd rather it was shorter and more perfect than that it drag on and on and lose too much of its punch.

And awww, you need a hug! *hugs* I'm not sure there ever will be a show like BSG for me. Each of my 'special' shows holds a particular niche in my heart... BtVS, AtS, Smallville, BSG... they're all special in different ways. But I've got too big an appetite for good TV, I think. I'll always look out for new shiny things, to ease the grief of losing others.

I want a show I can settle down with and rely on to be consistently good for the long-term and not get cancelled.
That's understandable! :-( It's very hard to find though. I only cope with the fact that I get 'too close' to TV by having multiple fandoms--when one's sucking, the other's shining. *g*

There are rumours flying that Season 4 will be the last season of Battlestar Galactica. I'd kind of already resigned myself to that possibility.

This breaks my heart, but only a little. Because I love the idea that it won't be stretched out until the writers don't know what to do anymore. I've seen too many shows do that and it's never pleasant. If they know where they're going and it's been set out this way from the beginning, I think it will be awesome. Still a little heartbroken, though. ;)

That's what I think too. They say they have a clear endpoint in mind so that reassures me, and it could make for a really amazing Season 4 with lots of punch.

I'm just at saturation point with the polarisation, you know? It's not just that people have different viewpoints, it's that they express them in THE most exaggerated ways. And it happens all the time! It's so predictable! I pass from rage to boredom in a split second now.

It's been *years* since I've been able to read the SV boards at TWoP, and I'm a big time old-school TWoP person. I personally blame Omar, who is the worst moderator I have *ever* seen over there. The SV boards at the beginning rivaled the Buffy boards in posting numbers, but it eventually came to this point where having opinions that didn't fall right in line with Omar's was not acceptable, thus those boards are only for people who think Lex=blameless woobie, Chloe=hung the moon, and Clark=BDA. Nowadays, I can only handle the Welling thread, and I used to read EVERY thread EVERY day!

Ah well, at least I still have LJ!
