Vid: Southside
Song: Southside
Artist: Moby
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica
Characters: Lee, Kara, Sharon, Helo
Premise: The idea for this vid came from Lee Adama's 'we're not a civilisation, we're a gang' speech sparking with a memory I had of Moby saying this song was about street gangs in a post-apocalyptic future.
Warnings: major spoilers for all three seasons, violence
Download: direct download (30MB), or streaming on BAM, Blip or YouTube
Feedback: Is treasured

Immense thanks to hazyshade and J for detailed and astute feedback (you can find their brilliant vids here) and to talitha78 for the best squee in the whole wide world, even if she doesn't know the source. ;-)

Lyrics
see myself in the pouring home
see the light come over now
see myself in the pouring rain
i watch hope come over me

here we are now, going to the east side
i pick up my friends and we start to ride
ride all night, we ride all day
some may come and some may stay

here we are in the pouring home
i watch the light man fall the comb
i watch a light move across the screen
i watch the light come over me

here we are now going to the west side
weapons in hand as we go for a ride
some may come and some may stay
watching out for a sunny day where there's

love and darkness and my sidearm
hey, elan

here we are now going to the north side
i look at my friends as they start to ride
ride at night we ride all day
looking out for a sunny day

here we are now going to the south side
i pick up my friends and we hope we won't die
ride at night, ride through heaven and hell
come back and feel so well

Dionusia: hi lee!dionusia on May 22nd, 2007 08:32 pm (UTC)
Okay, WHEW, I'm a little more coherent now, sorry. Wow, wow! I just adore the idea of having those four characters at the core of your vid. Amazing concept and great editing, I really felt the explosive energy!

Hard to single things out but both times Helo shot Athena I jumped in my chair! And I love how you cut the two shots of Kara and Boomer beside the raider. Whoa, cool.

One of my fave bits though is how you lined up the scene of Kara and Lee smiling in the Tomb and Helo and Athena smiling beside their child -- both moments of joy and faith. And of course the end, with the vipers in the clouds, then Earth, holy cow! I got more shivers than when I watched the finale.

Wonderful, wonderful. You captured so much about all their relationships and the show as well -- the overall arc of the journeys all four have made. You rock.

I have to go watch this again!

(And the viper/Blackbird kissing made it in! Awesome.

Okay, seriously, though. I loved that! So so much. I never would have thought of Southside as a BSG song, but obviously, it very much is. The pacing is fantastic, everything fits, and I love the whole tone of, I don't know, grimly enforced cheerfulness? I am probably not saying what I mean right. Too excited!

I LOVE IT! That's a really cool way of describing something it. I think it's got this determination and forward-momentum despite the constant cycle of disaster. (It also amuses me because it could sum up my own feelings for the show right now--it's a heartbreaking ride, BSG, but I remain 'grimly cheerful' ;-)).

Yay, it looks fantastic! Of course you already know I adore it, but I think I forgot to mention how much I admire the way you came at an action vid through a specific idea/theme tied to Lee's speech. :) The little character moments are made all the more rewarding for this, as we hurtle through the ongoing, adrenaline-dosed cycle of war and survival. You did a great job in bringing thematic coherence to every clip!

Rockin' AND revealing - what could be better?! ;)

Holy shit, this is cool. I love vids that focus on the boom-boom and the tangled social elements and the faith and the fight. I was also irrationally gleeful at the shot of the nuggets jumping up and down, because god knows the nuggets are woefully underrepresented in most fanvids. And your editing was excellent - simple and effective and on the beats for the most part, but with brief periods of very fast splicing that kind of slap the viewer in the face.

I LOVE IT.

Great words for expressing what I went for here!

I was also irrationally gleeful at the shot of the nuggets jumping up and down, because god knows the nuggets are woefully underrepresented in most fanvids.
They are, aren't they?! I really wanted to have more of them in there, to be honest--I'd orginally planned it to be more fully about all the pilots. But the vid grew organically in a way that made it imperative to tighten the focus. However, I feel the nuggets shot is still very important for creating the sense of an evolving 'gang'.

brief periods of very fast splicing that kind of slap the viewer in the face
Hee hee! Yes, I did go for the face-slapping in a few instances. I felt it was appropriate to keep the energy up and also because BSG has that 'shock' factor itself.

Wow, Bop! Cylons and humans as warring gangs - genius!! It's such a fresh look for footage we're all so familiar with - you've taken iconic shots and given them a new spin, and also done wonders with arresting moments from the less-favored eps (e.g. "The Passage"). I'm not a vidder so I don't have the technical vocabulary to describe what I enjoyed, but it was a powerful three minutes. :0) thanks for sharing, and I can't wait to see what you do with your Lee vid!!

Ohh, thank you! I was initially anxious in a fandom as well-vidded as BSG that everything would have been done before, but I have more vid bunnies than I know what to do with! And I'm glad you noticed the shots from the less-popular eps--that gives me faith that I pulled off something original. There are so many great moments hidden in BSG eps. The more I vid, the more I see. (Doubly so with Lee!)

It'll be back to the Lee vid now... which has been heavy going emotionally and creatively, but it's done me good to finish something else and take a break from it for a while.

That. Was. AWESOME. Seriously, kudos on an AMAZING job. This as some of the best editing I've ever seen, I think. Fit the music so perfectly and the flying scenes were seamless components of the overall vid and the way the four characters felt intertwined and part of a larger whole was just fantastic. Really loved this one.

Wow. I'm blown away by your feedback. I'm totally blushing over here! I'm particularly excited that you felt the flying scenes were seamles. I had a LOT of fun vidding them and could have made a vid entirely of space battles, I think, but I knew it was important to anchor the scenes to the characters.

I can't take too much credit there. The show gave me a lot to work with and the minute I heard that part of the track I felt it was made for those images. I did tweak it, but the beauty and power was in the source.

Do you have any SV vids (that I've obviously missed)?
I only have the one because my harddrive died taking all my ripped source files with it before I could make any more. Woe! It's Clex and it's my least favourite vid of mine, but it's here if you want to take a look. I think I've improved since then.

Wow, this was really good! I really liked the energy of this vid. And the mini shots! I know it's expensive to for them to create but the missiles and raiders back then were so pretty! This video reminds me why I like sci-fi. They're in space and they can do things we can't do yet.

And then you put in pilots! What wrong with me lately, it was so emotional. Maybe because they were so young then. I liked the way you combined the flippy ship footage with some emotional character images that pull the viewer in. Nuggets! I miss nuggets! Never thought I'd say it but I miss pilots, not just these four but the rest of them.

Great right up to ending on the beat with the earth shot. I really love sci-fi. Kudos!

Thank you!! I'm delighted you liked all the space battle shots--I can't tell you how much fun I had playing with all those shiny sequences. There were so many more I wanted to leave in, but I felt it was important to anchor them to the characters.

I'm glad you liked the nuggets too! I originally meant to have more of the other pilots, but I found the vid needed a sharper focus. However, I'm glad I left the implication there that there are a lot more of them.

Oh my gods...this is, without a doubt the best vid I've ever seen. Not just from a content standpoint but from a technical one as well. I enjoy the occasional vid and when I was first getting into BSG I was on YouTube obsessively finding anything and everything I could before I got the DVDs so I've seen my fair share of vids. This one is by far the best I've ever seen. Great clips, great song, great timing...just amazing.

And I like that it's got an almost upbeat hopeful feeling to it.

Really really looking forward to more.

Wow! That's amazing praise. Thank you! I do feel compelled to direct you to my vid recs--scroll through for BSG ones--there are a fair lot listed. There are lots of vids out there I consider better than mine, but I'm totally thrilled and chuffed that you like this one.

I'm particularly pleased the upbeat hopeful feel worked for you. BSG is a very bleak show and I didn't shy away from showing the violence and desperation here (I hope), but I tried to strike a balance and definitely ended on a hopeful note: there is forward momentum as well as a recurring cycle of violence. The main thing I pushed was the energy and the adrenalin that fuels the characters to keep on fighting. Those rare high moments of elation amidst the horror.
bradcpu: Serenitybradcpu on May 23rd, 2007 06:18 pm (UTC)
Wow, that was amazing! I've never seen a single episode of the show, but the use of light and motion here was just a whole new kind of spectacular. At times it was like watching a fireworks show.

Also, I'm not sure if this is what you intended - and maybe it's due to the tone of the (wonderful) song - but I just got a really warm, happy feeling of comradery while watching it. Again, I'm probably missing out on a lot as a fandom outsider.

A few of my absolute favorite moments:
The on-beat earth explosions in the opening... Heck, the whole opening. The way you followed the pulsing rhythm with the facial expressions, explosions, and tracking shots was just masterful.
"I see myself in the pouring rain" - love those two flashes!
"yeah yeah yeah" to the zooms. Ha. Love it!
Your musicality in the choruses is just ridiculous, with the wooshing motion, gunfire, and explosions just perfectly reflecting every instrument.
"I watch a light move across the screen" - That crossfade there works on so many levels
Running down the ladder to the guitars at the end of the bridge. :)
The ending. Of course. Schnikes, what a way to end it!

Very entertaining and very impressive, BSG fan or not.

Thank you soooo much for the awesome feedback. I'm delighted it worked for you as an outsider--that was one of my goals. I adore the show, and I did kind of want to showcase it to people who don't watch it.

This was my first action vid, so the fact that you thought the light and motion were well-handled means a great deal. I feel I was on a huge learning curve with that while making this--and I also discovered that I LOVE vidding action sequences. ;-) There was so much more of the space battles I wanted to keep...

At times it was like watching a fireworks show.
Eeeee! *treasures comment*

I just got a really warm, happy feeling of comradery while watching it.
AWESOME! I really really wanted that to come through. A lot of people focus on how bleak BSG is. And it is. It's an incredibly dark show (I think you'd like it!) but that makes the rare moments of elation and joy so much more precious--for both characters and viewers. The seed of the idea for this vid came from a comment one of the characters makes about them being a 'gang' and I thought a lot about the way gangs function--the infighting, but also the comradery that binds them together despite that.

I've been fascinated to hear what people's favourite moments are--there are lots of different reactions which thrills me! I'm especially excited that you liked the 'pouring rain' moment and the 'light moves across the screen' moment. Those two have a lot of context behind them, so I'm excited that they worked for an outsider aas well. I worry that I'm too much of a meta nerd and don't know how to convey things visually, so it's great to hear that those moments were powerful for you.

Running down the ladder to the guitars at the end of the bridge. :)
A personal favourite of mine!

The ending totally 'wrote' itself.

Okay, I'm going to gush for a minute now.

Firstly, that is absolutely some of the best editing I've ever seen. I was blown away, and then a little jealous, and then REALLY excited because now I have an awesome benchmark for what I want to aspire to in terms of technique/skill.

Onto the vid itself :) Thematically, this is a great idea: exploring the "us vs them" dichotomy throughout the series, as who the "bad" and "good" guys is constantly shifting. And lyrically: I loved seeing all the different places/battles the fleet has been in as the different "sides" of the hood. Also, ditto on what hazy said: the meta on the characters arcs really shines throughout the vid.

My absolute favorites right now: the flashes of Lee's face, the Sharon clips from Home, the Kara/Lee bits during "love and darkness and my sidearm" and the last lyrics from "heaven and hell" in Maelstrom straight into "come back" in the finale. Just brilliant. And what a fabulous ending too! That zoom out sync'd up beautifully with the fade out on the song.
