Hi LJ peoples! I have been much absent of late. I found myself indifferent about the remainder of the film festival this year--it felt very mediocre, which is perhaps reflective of a year that I've found mediocre overall as far as films are concerned. In fact, the film I've most enjoyed recently was not at the film festival at all. Forbidden Kingdom was an entirely satisfying film, despite it's teen flick status. The fact that it stars both Jackie Chan AND Jet Li should speak for itself. They both have a heap of fun in their roles. I particularly enjoyed seeing Li play the Monkey King, and Chan was at his perfect comedic best as the wine-drenched Daoist immortal. All in all it was a lot of fun, giving a new take on a classic tradition. And I could watch Jet Li forever. *happy sigh*

Other than that, I have very little to comment on at the moment. I have been much preoccupied with real life matters, but am looking forward to the end of this US summer hiatus... I miss my TV! The only things I've been watching are Middleman and Mad Men. I enjoy the first and wince at the second, but find I have nothing of note to say about either.

I hope you are all well and hope to rally up a little more online energy soon. ;)

Nora Norwich: Middleman by taraljcnorwich36 on August 17th, 2008 06:16 am (UTC)
I enjoy every single moment when I'm watching Middleman, but then I never have anything intelligent to say about it. Except usually wanting to quote about half of the lines, and that would require taking notes.

*Glomps you*

Yes, I agree completely about The Middleman. I did start a rewatch and started noting down the most quotable lines, but then I lost my notes and it all trailed off... :) It's perfect entertainment but there's not much more to say than 'eee! fun!' :)

Glad to hear you're doing okay! *hugs*

I'm mostly spending my time watching the Olympics but I'm very excited for the shows starting again. :D

Yeah, the Olympics have been ok, but our TV reception is dodgy so it's hit and miss which bits I get to see. Ah, the reliability of downloads... :)

Hi Bop! I dunno about US TV. No strike this year but the only thing that brought me to my TV recently was the Olympics.

VVC vid recs coming! I'm about to become a total vid head! Do rec any ones you like.

And hope RL goes okay. Good to see you around!
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!: Blair yelloqbop_radar on August 17th, 2008 11:27 pm (UTC)
You dunno?! US TV is all there is!! :p The Olympics are patchily interesting but if I had to download them I wouldn't be bothered, I must admit. I want my 30 Rock and Dexter and Gossip Girl and possibly those other shows which break my heart back!

I should be reccing VVC things, I know. But I'm kind of feeling really shy and reclusive about it. All my vidding friends are *actually there* so I feel kind of redundant, and every time I go look at VVC things I get overcome by envy. *shame!face* But yes... I will rally at some point and OD on vids. :)
daybreak777: sunrisedaybreak777 on August 18th, 2008 01:24 am (UTC)
Awww, Boppy! One day you will go to VVC! *consults crystal ball* Yes, I can feel it! I am looking for good vids for Lost or Heroes or House or BSG or something and am finding nothing. You're my only hope, I try to look at others' friends pages but I'm hopelessly lost.

We won't mention those shows that break one's heart. Nope! Especially since you can change their whole world with vidding. How didn't I know that? Vidding can break one in other ways, but we won't talk about that, either. I'm on a I-finished-the-vid high! :-) Looking for more shinies though . . .

One day, I hope! I promise you I'll get some vid recs up soon. I actually have a stack from some time ago that I really wanted to rec, and then I'm sure the VVC ones, of course.
daybreak777: sunrisedaybreak777 on August 18th, 2008 03:06 pm (UTC)
Yay, vids with heart, remember? I do have a preliminary list of vids like that. But I'm waiting for VVC to wow me so I can combine it all into one list.

I'll be on the lookout for your recs!

Oh I have to see Forbidden Kingdom. I grew up watching Jackie Chan and love Jet Li. :D
I think I saw Armour of God at least some 400 times. lol I used to watch that every day when I was little.

The Middleman is fun. I like the new boyfriend. Hope he'll stick around for awhile.
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!: Nodame rockbop_radar on August 17th, 2008 11:28 pm (UTC)
You MUST see Forbidden Kingdom then. It's lots of fun! :) And the opening credits are really really cool. Also, if you ever watched Monkey it has lots of nostalgia value.

I like the new bf too! And it felt like he was needed--it was just getting to the stage where a new dynamic needed injected into the show.
Cris: 30 Rockduskwillow on August 18th, 2008 10:40 pm (UTC)
I watched the movie last night. You were right, it was so much fun! :)
It was so good to see Jackie Chan and Jet Li in the same movie finally.
Though I must admit I found Jet Li more enjoyable as a monk than as the Monkey King.
And wine as an elixir cracked me up.
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!: Dead Like Mebop_radar on August 19th, 2008 01:12 am (UTC)
It was fun, wasn't it? The monk is more of a classic role for Jet--I did enjoy it too because he's so well cast for it, just as Jackie was for the drunken Immortal.

Hiiii! I need to sit down with Middlemen. I keep telling myself I will... and it just gets added to the long list of thing I need to do. :p But I have missed you! I was thinking about you yesterday and wondering how you were!

*MWAH*

Ahh, I have missed you too! I miss all the people and yet feel lethargic about posting/commenting. Silly. The Middleman is lots of frothy fun and has a Due-South aspect to it in the character of The Middleman, so I think you will enjoy when you get to it. It's a show you can catch up on any time though, I'm sure.

How is cake life? And is there a new romance in your life!?

Yeah, thanks... though it was neither Sunday nor summer for me. ;p It's cold and wintry here and already Monday. I am, however, having a short holiday break down the coast this weekend. Hopefully I'll come back refreshed and inspired!

*waves hi*

It's hard to know what to talk about during hiatus, as I'm not much of a real-life poster, so I get it. Always nice to hear from ya though! :)

Yeah, I'm not much of a RL poster either and while I have tackled many a hiatus before now, I seem somewhat thrown by this one. Perhaps it's just the winter blues.

ohh, i recently read some faboulous reviews in german for mad men!
why do you wince at it?

and re: forbidden kingdom, i am afraid, the hongkong tvb television series take on that classic tale in 1996 has been so good, and fantastic, and received just enthusiastic watchers across the the chinese viewers in asia, as well as the rest of the chinese community in the rest of the world, no other movie or tv (whether by western or asian production) has lived up that brilliance yet.

so, i just skimmed through forbidden kingdom, but found it to be utterly horrible *g*.
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!: Nodame rockbop_radar on August 19th, 2008 01:24 am (UTC)
Yes, Mad Men is getting lots of good reviews and it is definitely a very well-produced, sophisticated show. I find it uncomfortable viewing because I like so few of the characters and because the gender politics of the era (faithfully represented in the show) squick me so much. It's a love-hate thing.

the hongkong tvb television series take on that classic tale in 1996 has been so good
Ohhh, that sounds very cool--I wonder if I could hunt that out somewhere... In terms of narrative, I definitely think there was heaps of room for improvement in the movie--it wasn't that aspect that I enjoyed so much as the star quality of Jet Li and Jackie Chan.
Enderenderwiggin24 on August 19th, 2008 11:28 am (UTC)
ah i see!
well, i will dl the pilot of mad men, and see how i like it!
most of the time, I ought to be instantly fall in love, or leave it!

its very old and I dont think, you will find subtitles:
http://www.yesasia.com/us/the-monkey-sun-wu-kong-cantonese-mandarin-version-end/1003973476-0-0-0-en/info.html

the *problem* is, and I had it discussed with other LJ fans of chinese background like me, that TVB , the HK production studio and channel behind all those series, is -unlike Japanese or Korean, or even mainland chinese studios, who might even want to encourage and push their shows outside of their country and want the english speaking audience of the world knows and see their stuff with the help of subtitles, even if illegally - has the money and the manpower to hunt down all upload and sharing sites that spread their dramas. I have read about fans, who made subtitles, for some of their dramas, who get C&D letters.

not only have they sell and make money for the last 40 years, they have a worldwide overseas chinese heritage audience (we are talking about rougly 70 -100 Mio people of chinese background all over the world), that is even willing to pay money for it (I know it, my family has members, and friends, who are paid subscribers of their channels in Europe and north america).

even with the internet, and my generation and the younger ones being web fluent, and sharing and torrent etc knowledge, for each site, that I find, i am pretty sure, within the next 3 or 4 weeks, if its easily find via google, i know, TVB has send out legal letters and will shut it down. I am pretty sure, they have entire departments, just like the big hollywood studios, to scan the net.

ha, well, consider this a short intro into the other half of my fannish soul ;D

Ohh, that sounds interesting. I have not seen the movie but I think I heard about it. And I've definitely heard of the homeless World Cup--we had the nationals in Melbourne recently.
