BSG vid rec: Babies
In the first half of this season, my two shows (BSG and SV) seem to be determined to impose BABIES into the storyline. It's not the first time (on either show) but in both cases the maternal plots have caused Fandom Angst. At a personal level, they've also been (more than) a little challenging for non-maternal child-phobic me. At an intellectual level I've found both the Kara-Leoben-Kacey plot and the Lexana pregnancy interesting, but part of me was screaming inside: babies, eeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!! I've valiantly, I believe, tried to confront my own prejudices on this matter, and humour is my ally!

Now, coming to my rescue mid-season, is a delightful BSG vid by aycheb. It's to Pulp's 'Babies'. (Heeee!) They're one of my favourite bands ever and this song has always amused me greatly, but it amuses me times one hundred when put to such genius use. To say more is spoilery of the vid, but I highly recommend it!

Psssst, little k! There be your OTP therein! *shoos you*

We thought she was a Crouton, but she turned out to just be a regular kid with adorability superpowers. Like Bop, I have a low tolerance for baby storylines on TV shows (and even less tolerance for babies in real life), but this kid's so damn cute it's ridiculous. "Kawa, Kawa, Kawa! Gimme a hug!" made my ovaries twitch.

*giggle* Yup! Her cute is hard to resist... though I still kinda wish she was a Crouton!

Yeah, BSG's plot was darker and more complex. SV could explore a lot of interesting things with the pregnancy (will the child be a mutant? how will Lex/Lana react to that? hell, they could have made it Zod's child...) but so far they haven't. :-(

I think it's interesting what Kacey's done to Kara's characterization.
*nods* I'm glad they didn't dwell on it. Going to see Kacey and confronting what she went through was important, but it's also good to see Kara moving on--even if that means repressing as she usually does.

Hee. I love Jarvis. My boyfriend is puzzled why I keep dancing around the kitchen saying 'And you could be my girlfriend...'/'I want to give you children...' He says 'but I'm a boy'!! ;-)

Oh, that child is gorgeous!

Jason wasn't allowed to dominate the storyline just because he existed
That's true--I liked that, and consequently liked Jason a lot better than if he'd been shoved in our face as THE point of the movie.

The Kara-Kasey-Leoben plot felt like something I should have had a lot of problems with but I didn't.

I felt like Kara should have been a lot more skeptical given that (a) Leobens lie and she *knows* that's the design specification of that particular Cylon model
Yes, but she's vulnerable to Leoben and particularly his prophetic/visionary insights--we saw that in 1.08. She's also drawn to him despite herself (again, this was shown in 1.08), which reinforces Leoben's assertions that there's a spiritual connection between them. So I bought from the start that Leoben overrides her more rational self. She'd been under consistent pressure from him for four months. And Leoben knows how to press her buttons to get her to regress to her child-self, her abused self--that leaves her very fragile. I think by the time he introduced Kasey she was desperate. And once Kasey was injured, it gave Kara a way to be strong again--by accepting responsibility for the child, she could move out of victim mode and into her more adult protective mode--be the mother she would have wanted (since Kasey represented herself as an abused child). So Leoben was cleverly setting Kara up to feel empowered through that. And her need for empowerment at that point was desperate enough to override any rational rejection of the child as 'not hers'. She could have protected Kasey without accepting that she was hers, but that wouldn't have had the same emotional resonance for Kara--she was claiming a part of herself by claiming Kasey, reintegrating that broken child into herself: once falsely, and then (after Adama's prompting) more honestly. I don't think that's got anything to do with Kasey's adorableness--it's all about Kara's internal landscape.

I thought it was blackly comic when Lana was acting like it was the Worst!Thing!Ever! in Rage but now that she and Lex are happy about it, it's a lot less interesting
Yes. *yawns* There is so much they could explore and they're just not bothering--both with the child and with Lex. I'm happy the show's on a break for a while, since I'm a bit over it right now.
