Christmas Wish List

STEP ONE

Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.

STEP TWO

- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

1. This one means the most to me: if you haven't already done so, switch to green energy. If you live with your family, talk to them about it--talk to your friends about it, your parents, your relatives. It doesn't cost much extra and you can usually save back that money by being a bit more careful about turning off appliances when they're not in use and using power-saving lightbulbs. We're killing the planet, and until we show governments and big corporations that there's a demand for alternative energy sources, they're not going to do anything about it.

2. Icons! I loves them, I treasures them. They're are my preeeeciousssssssss.

3. Vid recs! Always! I'll watch anything--they don't have to be from my fandoms. Who's your favourite vidder? What's the funniest vid you've ever seen? What vids make you cry? Sexiest vid? Best use of metaphor? Best use of literalism? ;-)

4. Extension of this: know any good vid meta? Anywhere I can get tips on Final Cut Pro for beginners? Alternatiely: concrit on my vid, if/when I post it, would be very welcome.

5. Layout help. I'd like a new one that displays my tags in a side panel, but I get defeated by the technicalities. *bites lip*

6. Anything from www.oxfamunwrapped.com.au or www.goodgifts.org. Those guys rock! And I've never yet been given anything from them despite repeated hinting around my family.

7. Anything from my Amazon Wish List.

8. Extra userpics: impending date of (possible, tragic) deletion is Dec 16. :-( ETA: Thank you, aurora_bee!!

9. Music. Some of you know what I like. *g* (Ask radioreverie if you're not sure!)

10. Umm... *frowns* More time? I'd like more time for fannish things. *does the Hiro-freezing-time face* Can someone wave a magic wand for me?! Cross your fingers and wish for me!

Any kind of icons in particular?
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!: Lois searchingbop_radar on November 24th, 2006 12:59 am (UTC)
:-) I like amusing icons--a sense of humour is a very good thing! Any to do with the interests listed in my userinfo are probably a safe bet. I also love www.cuteoverload.com--so any icons made from amusing cute photos from there would be a winner. (If I ever made icons myself, I would make those.)

Alternatively, I'd love a personalised icon of Erica Durance/Lois Lane, with Bop or Boppy on it.

Hmm. For No. 9, I have the BSG soundtracks, Boondock Saints, Best of Alias CDs, Grey's Anatomy music...anything sound appealing? I have a bunch of random fannish soundtracks I've downloaded over the years too, so...yeah.
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!: TW smilebop_radar on November 24th, 2006 12:55 am (UTC)
Ohhh, yes! :-) I have the BSG soundtrack, and I believe I have the first CD of music released by Grey's, but the Alias stuff, I would be interested in.
Jonathan Toews does not want a sandwich.svmadelyn on November 24th, 2006 12:59 am (UTC)
Oh, the music for Grey's isn't the soundtrack...it's just basically every song they played on the show...ever, I guess. *g* I'm not that religious a follower of the show, but there's something like 70 songs in these files if you want 'em uploaded. :D

And I think these should work:

In the Harry Potter fandom, there's a vid you might like - The Boy Was a Puppet by Fabella. The song is "All That I Am" by Rob Thomas. Here's Fabella's site.

http://obsessive24.net/fabella.html

Of course if you're looking for something that's fun, go to youtube and type in Harry Potter It's Raining Men - I adore that vid because it always makes me smile.

Oh, thank you!! *hugs* I will check Fabella's vids out--I don't think I've seen any by her before.

'It's Raining Men'.... is that the one by bigmamag?! I've seen that! It's so funny! :-)

Have you already seen this piece of vid meta: http://synecdochic.livejournal.com/88913.html .

It's exactly the sort of "rules" thing that makes me grit my teeth in aggravation, but you might find it an interesting read.
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!: Lee thinking hmmbop_radar on November 24th, 2006 04:11 am (UTC)
Oh no! I've sinned already! ;-)

Seriously, though, if your song's over about three minutes and there aren't defined aural movements in it, it will drag when vidded.
Ummm.... *stares at ceiling* What does 'defined aural movements' mean exactly? I'm vidding a 4min 20sec track. (I didn't quite realise just how long that is!) I've hacked off 20secs at the end. And it does have emotional peaks and troughs, but 'defined aural movements'? o.O

Some of this is good though:

If you're relying on your audience thinking "yeah, that's from *this* particular episode", the clip's probably not interesting enough
I've learnt that one!! In the vid I'm currently making I totally had that problem. I wanted to use a moment where a character pauses because of something another character says but it looked totally unexciting on screen and definitely didn't fit the crescendo of music I set it to. While it was an emotionally significant moment in the show, it didn't have enough visual power. I cut it and redid the chorus a different way. *is chuffed she learnt a thing*

I'm also ok on the effects issue because (HA!) I don't know how to use ANY yet! ;-)

But I see why some of this might make you want to grit your teeth--even as a vid viewer, I take issue with the 'some clips are overused' line.

But thanks, it was a good read. I think this line--the aural/visual cues will be so unmeshed that your audience will know something's wrong with the vid even if they can't put their finger on it--will ring in my ears for some time, as I feel that I'm only just getting a handle on that--it all feels just slightly out of reach at the moment...
Talithatalitha78 on November 24th, 2006 05:47 am (UTC)
it all feels just slightly out of reach at the moment...

This is exactly why such lists annoy the hell out of me. If I were a newbie vidder reading that thing, I would be utterly disheartened. Some of that tech stuff is freakin' hard and/or downright expensive to do--not everyone can afford to use the best source because not everyone can just go out and buy a 400GB hard drive at the drop of a hat. Does that mean that they shouldn't still try to tell their stories the best way they can? It's taken me two years to finally get away from wmv encoding. Does that mean that all of my previous vids are worthless? Grrrrr....

On a happier note, final draft coming your way in just a few minutes! Yay!!!

*nods* I'm terrible at tech stuff. And it's taken me a long long time to save up for the laptop and the 250GB harddrive that I have at the moment--it's a miracle I've got what I've got, let alone setting the bar higher. And I agree that that shouldn't mean people can't tell their stories. I love many, many vids that don't measure up by these standards.

It's great to get advice on how to improve your vidding (IF you have the necessary resources), but it should be viewed as that, not the baseline acceptable. Personally, I'm determined enough and robust enough to deal, but if I was less confident, I'd definitely be put off. I found the same sort of thing when I tried to make icons. There are all sorts of 'dos' and 'don'ts' that are really hard for non-technically minded me, and I found I had all these artificially high standards for myself--I couldn't just find an image I liked and slap some text on it--even though that might have been what I originally wanted to do.

Just a selection of stuff I had on my memory stick - mainly British indie. Hope you enjoy it, and that you haven't got it all already :) I highly recommend The Fratellis!

I wish they offered Green energy here! For the longest time, I couldn't even recycle unless I went to the dump. Or onto Disney property. I have the energy-saving bulbs, and I use sunlight during the day (you'd be surprised how long it took to catch on to that concept). I'm always open to more suggestions. Saving the world is certainly an admirable goal, and I admire your passion for it.
Thank you for the links. I can save a penguin! The handling fee is almost as much as the donation though. $23 to save the penguin, $19 to send the card? I don't know...
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!: SV fangirlsbop_radar on November 27th, 2006 01:25 am (UTC)
Oh, no! That's really annoying for you. At least you can recycle now. It's good of you to think of it despite the lack of infrastructure. It really is annoying that governments trail behind in this stuff, but often it does take individuals to take the first steps themselves. We're pushing for our company to get an energy audit done--usually companies can save a lot of money by going green and being less wasteful, so we're pushing the economic advantages to persuade them. ;-) And I try to eat as much locally produced food as possible (saves heaps on transport-related emissions). But what I really need to do is either drive my car less or sign up with an emissions-offset scheme. *ponders*

Oh, yeah, that's a bit steep!!! Do you have to send the card? If you can get it without it, it seems better without it!! *nods*
