Underworld concert, 28 January 2003
In a week when I had dealt with author plagiarism, other authors bullying me to accept absurd changes, the Catholic right trying to dictate what we print on contraception in a high-school textbook, and one Very Big Nob, it was a great pleasure to go out and dance to the music of the two (very genki) little guys from Underworld.
For those who care: they played a two-and-a-half-hour set at the Metro, which warranted the $65 entry fee I had initially staggered at. Despite a slow start - a quick salute to the crowd and a slow track - they built into a fantastic (and exhausting) performance. No reliance on crazy images, crazy clothes or crazy hair; just excellent music (and a little crazy dancing!). 'King of snake' was a real show-stopper and 'born slippy' a predictable crowd favourite, with pretty, showery disco lights.
I had staked out a position on the top floor of the Metro and co-opted some dancy guys next to me into removing the sofa cushions behind the security guard's back. We then had an elevated dancefloor, and they had even brought talcum powder. Solid!
Despite his bop-lessness, A had a great time, and my shins haven't hurt that much since the DDR marathon with Cat!
Thanks to the guys from Underworld to putting the smiles back in my week!
