an open-ended gathering of vidders, AMVers, remixers, etc (or fans thereof), to be held end of November/start of December 2010 in Wollongong (or possibly Sydney)
Possible academic component
The reason we're looking at Wollongong is that there is a chance of a formal academic portion to the program, run by the University of Wollongong--this isn't confirmed yet, but if it were to go ahead, gathering attendees would be invited to it too. So, for instance, the fanvid/AMV/remix informal gathering might be on Saturday and Sunday, academic symposium Monday/Tuesday. You wouldn't have to attend both, but the option may be there.
Even if that doesn't get off the ground, Wollongong is a good option because it's very close to Sydney (1 hour south) but is cheaper. :) The question of where to hold an Aus gathering/convention is obviously rife with problems as Australasia is a huge region so nearly all of us will need to travel substantial distances to get there. However, cheap flights are available to Sydney regularly from other major cities, and it's about as 'central' (in terms of population distribution) as we could get, I think. If we go ahead, I'll post travel advice/deals regularly. We may be able to hold it (or part of it) in Sydney if there was overwhelming preference for that, but do bear in mind that prices for everything (accom, food, etc) are going to be more expensive there.
What does 'informal/open-ended' mean?
Ok, so we're using those terms at the moment for a couple of reasons:
1. This may end up being a very small gathering comparative with overseas events. Personally I don't care how small it is, I'm still interested in it going ahead and think it can still have value. It's a bit hard to call it a 'convention' though at this stage! ;)
2. At the moment the content is very open: I have plenty of ideas, but I'd really prefer to see them shaped or influenced by people who are actually likely to attend. We will be firming up a program of sorts, but basically if you have a cool idea, float it and it's likely to go ahead, because this can be whatever we want it to be. Please don't think this will mean a lack of focus though--if no one else can be bothered to provide one, I will. :p
3. Please note that the description of who is welcome to attend is broader than just fanvidders. Both nushanakt and I are committed to this. The academic component, if it went ahead, would be broader than just fanvidding, but more than that, I think this could be one of the appeals of the gathering--a chance for creators from different traditions to get together and trade ideas. That doesn't mean we can't have some purely fannish things on the (informal!) agenda. It also means you definitely don't have to be an artist yourself to attend--an interest in vidding/AMV/remix culture is enough.
4. One thing I'd love to have is for this event to have an online presence as well--a dedicated website and the opportunity for people to engage with the convention in some way online (e.g. hosting of vids submitted, chat forum). That may be a pipedream but at the moment I'm at the brainstorming all ideas stage. ;)
Any pimping of the idea is gratefully received. I know there are Aussies and New Zealanders tucked away in corners of every fandom, so getting the word out there in any form is greatly appreciated. We will be advertising this event beyond just Livejournal, so that we can hopefully reach the wider audience (YouTubers, Ning network vidders without LJ accounts, AMVers, etc) that we're after. I've got a few ideas of other forums to approach but any suggestions on networking are very welcome.
If you are interested in supporting this event in any way, even if you can't attend, I'd love to hear from you. Support could take the form of: pimping, offering help in terms of website, design, organising/admin, submitting vids, hosting discussions, brainstorming ideas, and I'm sure many more things I haven't thought of.
I realise it's very early days for people to actually commit to attending. Details of costs, travel, etc will follow. But here's a very, very preliminary poll
I would be interested in:
Know someone who might want to attend? Send them this way! Feedback welcomed on all points, although please understand that comments such as 'should be in Alice instead!' may have limited support. ;) (If I was in Alice, I'd want it there too, but hey we need to find some sort of compromise or this will never happen, yes?)
