Australia/NZ vidding gathering
So ages ago I floated the idea of an informal vidding gathering in Australia. Somewhat more organised plans are now in motion, thanks to nushanakt. At the moment the plan looks like this:

an open-ended gathering of vidders, AMVers, remixers, etc (or fans thereof), to be held end of November/start of December 2010 in Wollongong (or possibly Sydney)

Possible academic component
The reason we're looking at Wollongong is that there is a chance of a formal academic portion to the program, run by the University of Wollongong--this isn't confirmed yet, but if it were to go ahead, gathering attendees would be invited to it too. So, for instance, the fanvid/AMV/remix informal gathering might be on Saturday and Sunday, academic symposium Monday/Tuesday. You wouldn't have to attend both, but the option may be there.

Even if that doesn't get off the ground, Wollongong is a good option because it's very close to Sydney (1 hour south) but is cheaper. :) The question of where to hold an Aus gathering/convention is obviously rife with problems as Australasia is a huge region so nearly all of us will need to travel substantial distances to get there. However, cheap flights are available to Sydney regularly from other major cities, and it's about as 'central' (in terms of population distribution) as we could get, I think. If we go ahead, I'll post travel advice/deals regularly. We may be able to hold it (or part of it) in Sydney if there was overwhelming preference for that, but do bear in mind that prices for everything (accom, food, etc) are going to be more expensive there.

What does 'informal/open-ended' mean?
Ok, so we're using those terms at the moment for a couple of reasons:
1. This may end up being a very small gathering comparative with overseas events. Personally I don't care how small it is, I'm still interested in it going ahead and think it can still have value. It's a bit hard to call it a 'convention' though at this stage! ;)
2. At the moment the content is very open: I have plenty of ideas, but I'd really prefer to see them shaped or influenced by people who are actually likely to attend. We will be firming up a program of sorts, but basically if you have a cool idea, float it and it's likely to go ahead, because this can be whatever we want it to be. Please don't think this will mean a lack of focus though--if no one else can be bothered to provide one, I will. :p
3. Please note that the description of who is welcome to attend is broader than just fanvidders. Both nushanakt and I are committed to this. The academic component, if it went ahead, would be broader than just fanvidding, but more than that, I think this could be one of the appeals of the gathering--a chance for creators from different traditions to get together and trade ideas. That doesn't mean we can't have some purely fannish things on the (informal!) agenda. It also means you definitely don't have to be an artist yourself to attend--an interest in vidding/AMV/remix culture is enough.
4. One thing I'd love to have is for this event to have an online presence as well--a dedicated website and the opportunity for people to engage with the convention in some way online (e.g. hosting of vids submitted, chat forum). That may be a pipedream but at the moment I'm at the brainstorming all ideas stage. ;)

Any pimping of the idea is gratefully received. I know there are Aussies and New Zealanders tucked away in corners of every fandom, so getting the word out there in any form is greatly appreciated. We will be advertising this event beyond just Livejournal, so that we can hopefully reach the wider audience (YouTubers, Ning network vidders without LJ accounts, AMVers, etc) that we're after. I've got a few ideas of other forums to approach but any suggestions on networking are very welcome.

If you are interested in supporting this event in any way, even if you can't attend, I'd love to hear from you. Support could take the form of: pimping, offering help in terms of website, design, organising/admin, submitting vids, hosting discussions, brainstorming ideas, and I'm sure many more things I haven't thought of.

I realise it's very early days for people to actually commit to attending. Details of costs, travel, etc will follow. But here's a very, very preliminary poll

Poll #1486903 Aus/NZ vidding convention

I would be interested in:

attending in person
following reports online
helping brainstorm or organise
supporting in some other form

Know someone who might want to attend? Send them this way! Feedback welcomed on all points, although please understand that comments such as 'should be in Alice instead!' may have limited support. ;) (If I was in Alice, I'd want it there too, but hey we need to find some sort of compromise or this will never happen, yes?)

I am liking the November/December timeslot. Gencon is locked into 23-26th of September, so if it was conflicting I probably wouldnt be able to go. But its not! So I can!

Will do what I can to help out/brainstorm between now & then. :)

AWESOME! :D I'm really glad the time works out for you. Hopefully it will work for other people too! I'm excited about getting something off the ground, even if it's small. And if you have any ideas of things you'd like, throw them out there.

Actually, locking in a specific date as soon as possible would be a good idea as it will give people time to plan for holidays if they need to & take advantage of any cheap flights the airlines have between now & then.

Good idea--- even if it's just the three of us!

I agree--we'll try and do that ASAP!

I've been out of town for a few days down the coast, but I'm really glad to see this post! My uni email is down for the next few days for maintenance, but drop me a line when you get a chance and let me know what kind of feedback you're getting!

Will do! I've been rather swamped with life myself but getting back to it...!

Hey, I'm actually from the area (ZOMG WOLLONGONG!!! *is totally in shock*) so... I don't know how much help I'll be but I'm totally happy to do what I can.

Yay!! That's exciting! Thank you so much! It's great to hear from someone in the area. We shall gather people incrementally, I suspect! ;)

That's brilliant! Thank you so much for the offer of help. And I will let nushanakt know too, as she'll be more involved on the academic side of things and I'm sure would welcome your input!

My apologies for the slow reply over the Christmas period. I'll be looking to push on with ideas and with putting feelers out there to other people over the next month or so so hopefully I'll have more news soon. :)

I think this is a totally awesome idea (as I was here due to festivids, it's been very hard to stay silent). I would be there with bells on as long as it's not during a teaching week. Let me know if there's anything I can do.

Hiiiiiiii!! YOU MADE MY VID! \o/ *happy dance* OMG, thank you so much--it was such a mood lifter! :D

And it's very exciting to hear you are into the idea of an Aus vid con. The good news is that plans are underway and we are probably looking at having it in the first week of December, with the academic component on the 2-3 (Thurs/Fri) and the more informal (but hopefully still awesome!) vidder gathering/con on the 4/5, the weekend.

I hope to make a comm announcement shortly so that we'll have a 'home', and I'll then be asking for suggestions for panels, shows, etc. :D

Yay! That timing should work perfectly for me. I shall put on my thinking cap and come up with a paper topic. Maybe I'll have some of my Aussie remix project done by then.

Oh, you have an Aussie remix project? How appropriate!

Here via cupidsbow.

Oooooooooooooooh! *is wildly tempted* I'd prefer Sydney for ease of access (am in Wellington, NZ) but if I'm still vidding half as madly in Oct/Nov/Dec as I am now, I expect I'll be willing to go the extra distance, health permitting. Ooooh!

(Also, to any Wgtn or NZ vidders who happen to see this in passing and who want to meet up, HAI! *waves*)

Hey there!! YAY A KIWI! \o/ We can be multinational! I hope you can make it. *G* I understand about Sydney, and we haven't ruled out having at least part of it in Syd, but if we do stick to Wollongong we'll be sure to provide lots of details of how to get there easily, as most of us will be flying into Sydney. (It's pretty straightforward.)

I should have a comm up shortly for it and will announce it in vidding, so more news soon, I hope!

There is a *chance* I might be able to go. I'm hoping to travel later in the year and I'd love to go to Australia so this might work out if I can get the money.

Wow, that would be so awesome if you can make it! FYI it is most likely to be on 4/5 December. I'll announce that formally soon, as I hope to get a comm up and running this week.
