Heat vs Brisbane
Can some northern hemisphere peeps send some Arctic chills down here to Melbourne? We are sweltering! It was 43 today. It's still 38 now, at 9:30 pm. I have wet towels on my head and a fan, but I would seriously kill for aircon... sigh. Good thing I'm back at work today, saving up for it!

It's our state's first 'Code Red', the newly (since-Black-Saturday) instigated 'catastrophic weather conditions' warning system they whacked on the end of our existing fire warning system. So far no major outbreaks but the conditions today definitely warranted the warning which I understand to mean 'really f-ing hot, consider getting the hell out of fire zones'.

Brisbane was very pleasant--more humid but less extreme temperatures and enough cloud cover to avoid severe burns. It was especially well suited to a day-night music festival... no having to worry about bringing cold and hot weather clothing! I just stayed in a t-shirt all night. Whee!

The festival was very relaxed all round, though there was the occasional over-intoxicated yob. Sunset Sounds is held in Brisbane's Botanic Gardens, right on the river, with three stages in amongst huge fig trees (fun to swing off) and frangiapanis in bloom (lots of girls picked off flowers for their hair). The fruit bats fly over at sunset.

The big name acts were Moby, Grizzly Bear, Jamie T, Editors, Temper Trap (local, have they broken overseas yet? they're booming here) and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I was more interested in seeing Emiliana Torrini (gorgeous live), Andrew Bird (a bit meh live), Sarah Blasko (my personal standout) and a few others. While they're not my usual taste in music, I also really loved the chance to see the Hilltop Hoods play an Aussie crowd--as I expected they brought amazing energy and the crowd totally loved them. Fun to see and they had some gorgeous comic art graphics behind them. It was easy to stumble from stage to stage finding things of interest--good breadth of artists.

Did some other sightseeing, relaxedly, around the city--the Southbank area with its manmade beach on the river and meandering parklands was enjoyable for walking around. I also got the chance to meet mranderson71 for scones and coffee and vid chat. Yay! Oh and I also got my favourite seafood: Moreton Bay Bugs... mmmm... expensive but yum and much harder to get here!

I would have happily stayed longer in Brizzie but work called... turns out it's bloody hard to work in a house with no aircon on a 43 degree day though. :( So far, not so good... hope the cool change kicks in tomorrow. The four-legged furry members of my household are also struggling.

I just made it with my Festivid assignment. Phew! Must end post... require more ice...

I would gladly send you all that snow that buried us here. Trains can't drive, streets are blocked, lots of people don't have power... I don't have much problems for now but still... thinking about swelter...:)))

Yikes, yes, we have seen on the news the crazy weather in Europe! I hope you stay safe and warm!

I wish I could help you out too, I'd give anything for more hot weather right now. It's been in the low teens with wind chills hovering around 0 and that is TOO COLD. We didn't get much snow but we got a good mess of black ice left from what we did get.

Hope it cools off for you soon.

That does indeed sound TOO COLD! They really should work out some kind of weather-trade system whereby we could all find a happy medium. ;)

Just saying hello. We'll take some of your heat up here, it's freezing. We're in the 30s and we go by Fahrenheit :D

Ahhh... yes, that's just wrong! We've just got our blessed cool change. Yay!

oh wow, that festival sounds awesome! grizzly bear & andrew bird (BUT HE IS SO MADE OF ♥) & everyone. i've never heard of sarah blasko though... will have to investigate.

+ if you give me some of your heat, i'll try & send you some snow in return ;) (i wish i could - i can't wait for summer!)

Hee, yeah, I think my expectations for Andrew Bird were too high... it's hard when you really want to see someone for ages, they have a lot to live up to and maybe it wasn't quite the right crowd for him.

Sarah Blasko is an Aussie artist. I like her. She's quirky and whimsical and she has a haunting voice.

It always seems so unfair at this time of year that there is not a weather trading scheme... ;)

I'll send you our crappy weather! Seriously, it's cold as crap here. Yay for festivids!

We see the crazy cold weather on the news every night... I'm sure i'd hate it if I had to live with it, but it does seem unfair that we're all at such extremes!

He-he. You know what? I'd kill for an extra heater now, because it's -18 in Moscow - it hurts to breathe and you feel like parts of your face are about to fall off when you spend more than 20 minutes outside. Care to barter? :)

I'm glad you enjoyed the trip and got a chance to have a chat with another dedicated vidder. That must've been fun :)

Toooooo cold! Too cold! I wish we could trade some degrees with one another! :)

It was my first time meeting another vidder in person! \o/ Exciting! :D

I have to reply to your email, which I have been thinking lots about!

It sounds as if you had a good time :) I'd offer to have you as a houseguest for a while so that you can enjoy the frigid weather here, but by the time you've paid at short notice to travel here you may as well have paid for aircon.

And, I'm doing well... I recognised the name of at least one of those bands! :D

If getting to chat vidding with mranderson71 was anything like as much fun or as interesting as chatting vidding with m_a_r_i_k_s, you must've had loads and loads of fun :)

Yeah, this is true... I may as well get aircon. Actually I'm thinking of breaking into my mother's place next time the temp gets above 40 (she has aircon). :)

Sounds like a fun festival. :)

Yikes! That is hot! I hope it cools down for you soon.

It was! And it is. :) And I got your card (did I mention that already? We had mail strikes so many of them came late but still lovely to get. Thank you! *G*)

A colleague of mine lives in Manchester, UK.. he was at like -10C and he said his sister is in Australia, and was at like 40C where she is (not sure)... I think he'd have preferred the heat to the feet of snow..

'really f-ing hot, consider getting the hell out of fire zones'.

Festival sounded like fun.. stay cool!
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!bop_radar on January 14th, 2010 09:36 pm (UTC)
I'd have preferred the snow. :( I mean, not permanently, but as a once-off weather event? yeah, definitely. There are different kinds of heat. In Melbourne, we tend to get the 'hell on earth' variety a couple of times a year. Unfortunately we get the 'holiday heat' variety with less regularity. :( I like my hot with a bit of humidity so I don't feel like a sand dune or a shrivelled piece of parchment. ;)
ez_as_pi on January 20th, 2010 01:57 am (UTC)
I wish the heat we get here was a wee bit less humid.. I do not look good as a limp piece of lettuce :)
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!bop_radar on January 22nd, 2010 07:09 am (UTC)
Ah! *head nod* It is true ... surely there must be a happy medium somewhere? :)
ez_as_pi on January 22nd, 2010 12:32 pm (UTC)
I'm waiting for the invention of 'Weather to Order' :D
