It's our state's first 'Code Red', the newly (since-Black-Saturday) instigated 'catastrophic weather conditions' warning system they whacked on the end of our existing fire warning system. So far no major outbreaks but the conditions today definitely warranted the warning which I understand to mean 'really f-ing hot, consider getting the hell out of fire zones'.
Brisbane was very pleasant--more humid but less extreme temperatures and enough cloud cover to avoid severe burns. It was especially well suited to a day-night music festival... no having to worry about bringing cold and hot weather clothing! I just stayed in a t-shirt all night. Whee!
The festival was very relaxed all round, though there was the occasional over-intoxicated yob. Sunset Sounds is held in Brisbane's Botanic Gardens, right on the river, with three stages in amongst huge fig trees (fun to swing off) and frangiapanis in bloom (lots of girls picked off flowers for their hair). The fruit bats fly over at sunset.
The big name acts were Moby, Grizzly Bear, Jamie T, Editors, Temper Trap (local, have they broken overseas yet? they're booming here) and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I was more interested in seeing Emiliana Torrini (gorgeous live), Andrew Bird (a bit meh live), Sarah Blasko (my personal standout) and a few others. While they're not my usual taste in music, I also really loved the chance to see the Hilltop Hoods play an Aussie crowd--as I expected they brought amazing energy and the crowd totally loved them. Fun to see and they had some gorgeous comic art graphics behind them. It was easy to stumble from stage to stage finding things of interest--good breadth of artists.
Did some other sightseeing, relaxedly, around the city--the Southbank area with its manmade beach on the river and meandering parklands was enjoyable for walking around. I also got the chance to meet mranderson71 for scones and coffee and vid chat. Yay! Oh and I also got my favourite seafood: Moreton Bay Bugs... mmmm... expensive but yum and much harder to get here!
I would have happily stayed longer in Brizzie but work called... turns out it's bloody hard to work in a house with no aircon on a 43 degree day though. :( So far, not so good... hope the cool change kicks in tomorrow. The four-legged furry members of my household are also struggling.
I just made it with my Festivid assignment. Phew! Must end post... require more ice...
