Heroes 1.08
Wow, lots of interesting reveals in this episode! I thought it was much more suspenseful and better paced that the last couple of eps. I like that we found out about Mr Bennett's adoption of Claire. He's a very intriguing character now, and I find his commitment to saving his daughter sympathetic, despite his dubious methods. And I also like that it sets up that there are other people on the trail of Sylar. I also like that Mr Bennett's history with the people with powers dates back a couple of decades.

Mohinder got a plot! Though he's still pretty daft and apparently can't run faster than a pre-teen. *sigh* Despite this, I enjoyed his dreams and the fact that his family history runs a little deeper than straightforward angst about his father. I wasn't that sold on the geneticist woman (Maya?). I didn't think much of her plan to employ someone she has history with as one of her first acts as head of department. *frowns* Could she have a secret agenda? If so, she seemed pretty damn obvious about it with the 'leave your father's secrets locked away' ultimatum. Still, it was good to see Mohinder getting some development, and the dream child is intriguing. (Aside: hee! The props guys threw Aboriginal Dreamtime images thrown in the folder! Why not?! Also that 'Yes or No' computer screen was cracking me up. We get it already!)

Love, love, loved Hiro's plot. He was very cute crushing on that girl. And I hope that girl does get saved because a girl with an intellect-based superpower would be a wonderful addition to the team. I'd even forgive the fact that she's another skinny blonde! (Though I tell you, those casting guys have a fetish.) However, I'm getting a big vibe that Hiro's going to fail on this one. This feels like the middle journey experience that proves just how dangerous the enemy is and ups the stakes... but I could be wrong. Alternatively, I'd love them to need her to help save Claire, though that's going to make for a lot of ground to cover next ep...

I found the cop's plot very suspenseful though I haven't mastered anyone's name in that plot yet. I like the blonde FBI chick a lot and I liked her cracking it with reading-minds-guy and the fact that her job was normal until she got the Sylar case. And while I don't fully emphathise with the mindreader, I found his desperation to connect with someone else going through the same experience and find out what's happening to him very interesting. And it was great that they put together the pieces on the blacking out and marks on their necks. Jigsaw puzzle pieces clicking into place! Very satisfying!

um...I agree with this post? :D

I find Mr. Bennett's storyline most enjoyable, he is now one of my favourite characters and I will cry if he is a baddie, yes, yes I will.

Heee! Yes, Mr Bennett has grown on me lots of lots. I think he's slightly baddy (methods) but frankly I don't care about the Evil Pixie and I think the show's working to show us that he's morally ambiguous but not black and white evil. Yay!
Nora Norwichnorwich36 on November 16th, 2006 03:30 pm (UTC)
I was suspicious of Maya's motives, and my immediate thought was "Why are potential love interests for Mohinder in this show all so hinky?"

With you, I fear that the waitress will not be saved (or that she will, but it's going to cost Hiro something he can't afford to pay--like Ando.) But I also agree that the pacing of this episode was very well done, and I loved learning more about Mr. Bennett.

I can't wait until next week's episode!

Hee! So true. But I was busy muttering to myself 'Still better than the Evil Pixie, still better than the Evil Pixie...'

*nods* Yes, they could take the 'sacrifice' route too. Ouch! Though I don't like Ando on his own, I think it would be heartbreaking to see Hiro lose him.

And I was totally left wanting more! I was seriously disappointed/shocked when the credits came. Mooooooooorreee!

It's true that Maya (a) is lovelier and (b)less anorexic and (c) less annoying than Evil Pixie. And clearly she's Mohinder's ex, which could potentially be fun. Maybe she runs the Indian version of whatever government agency Mr. Bennett works for?

And yes, this show is ALWAYS too short. Heck, we didn't see a bit of what's up with Niki/Micah/D.L., or for that matter Nathan!
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!: Nikkibop_radar on November 16th, 2006 10:53 pm (UTC)
Trust me, the absence of Nathan was foremost in my mind! ;-) And yeah, I didn't get to show off my completely gorgeous new Niki icon! Grr...

Maybe she runs the Indian version of whatever government agency Mr. Bennett works for?
That would be fun! Though I also like the idea that there are different groups/organisations all over the world secretly with the same agendas but independent just now--perhaps to hook up later. That would mirror the heroes themselves nicely.

Awww, but Nathan will comfort him, Becky, by taking him flying! (Has sekrit Nathan/Hiro fondness.) But I love your vehemence!

I completely agree. I actually LIKE Ando, and right now Hiro/Ando are definitely my OTP in this fandom. Though they can certainly have a threesome with the waitress if they so desire.
nehellania on November 16th, 2006 06:25 pm (UTC)
Hee. I noticed that Aboriginal Dreamtime stuff too. I was very confused for a minute there really but it was cool looking and all so yay props guys!

I'm right there with you on the thinking that memory-girl isn't going to be saved. Man Sylar really does get around, doesn't he?

I think out of all of them, I empathise with reading-minds-guy, as you call him, the most. His power, while very cool, is incredibly destructive in a benign sort of way. I guess what I mean to say is that it's potentially destructive to him. He won't only hear the good stuff, but he'll also inevitably hear the bad. My only qualm with it is that it seems sort of..convenient. So he can only hear the thoughts of one person at a time unless he's drugged or whatever? Does he have to concentrate for that to happen? I think that this is one of those powers that should have/maybe still will develop over time into something more.

Ahem. Yes. So there's my semi-deep thoughts for the day. Now I'm off to wash the dishes! (my life. so exciting.)

Heee! Yes. I was 'WTF?! Oh, well...'

Sylar really does get around, doesn't he?
He does! Either he has multiple powers or he's actually a team of people. Because that's some serious travel/stalking.

I think it's a very interesting power, yes. And there's lots of room for complexity with it. My problems with him so far have been his naievety with it, and, as you say, the fact that it does seem to be exercised conveniently when most required at the moment. But perhaps there is something about the powers that is triggered when the hero feels heightened emotion? Nikki's alter-ego comes out under pressure, and we saw Nathan save Peter under pressure though we know he doesn't have his power under control yet. So perhaps it will get more complex as he explores the power, yes...

This show owns me!!!!!

I am super glad that Mohinder finally got a plot! Love Hiro's plot too!!! He owns me!!!

And I am thrown by Claire's dad ... good guy? bad guy? Me confused ... but intrigued!

It's so much fun! So many characters and plots! Even a plot for Mohinder now! \o/
Hiro is made of awesome. And I'm thinking Claire's dad's going to be the 'morally ambiguous but not necessarily evil, depending on your perspective' guy.

You are so good to me! :-)

Someone on my flist theorized it's possible that averting the waitress' death causes a shift in the timeline that actually leads to the destruction of New York/the world and Hiro will figure that out, thus making his dilemma the zenith of heroic dilemmas: is one life worth millions of lives in exchange?
Great theory! And thanks heaps for the comment recap. That's very convincing and fits perfectly with the sort of dilemmas they're setting up and the domino-like character connections. Awesome! I can't wait to see the fallout--non-nuclear preferred! ;-)

Mr Bennet, while creepy, is proving his worth here. I will be bummed if he turns out to be the head honcho of a secret-secret government agency designed to control and find the heros...mostly because that's been done and done before. Whoever he is working for needs to have more oomph than that. I might be willing to forgive that if his annoying wife and her dog are Sylar's next victims mostly because I don't really see how they can keep them in the storyline which IMO needs to bring everyone together soon - possibly NY? Who knows. I do know lotsa stuff happens in next week's ep - from the ad on youtube - and nothing else. :)

Mira, not Maya. Hm, a secret government agent? I spent most of her scenes half wondering if she's going to break out into song, flick her hair back and lean in to kiss Mohinder...and then look away *shrugs* I grew up with movies like this, I couldn't help myself. I can't see her being a government agent...mostly since I seem to have this thing against governments being involved in stuff like this. I makes things too us versus them, you know? I like the idea of her being an agent of her company - lots more grey and potential if there are geneticts etc who know this is happening and are trying to find out more about the heroes. I was wondering if the dream sequence wasn't a hint that Mohinder does have a power after all, especially since it was revealed that his sister might have been the person to set his father on this path searching for heroes. Think of a variation of dreamwalking like Isabel on Roswell. Something like that.

Oh dear, I thought Hiro's girl was a red-head *woopsies*. I'm going to hope he doesn't fail...but I sincerely hope that Ando isn't the trade off. That image of him sitting there waiting for Hiro - who doesn't reappear - just filled me with dread.

Matt, the poor thing is like a big old teddy bear who needs a hug desperately. Andrea has potential to be an ally for Matt and it occured to me a direct link back to the government. Should she find out about the rest of the heroes she might find herself smack dab in the middle of her agency and them - which has more potential for angst than anything else.

And Bop, totally up to you - want to know a casting spoiler ;) See how good I am asking and all? You might have heard about it by now, but it's just a name and it's *SWEEETTTT* :)

Heee! Yes! I think they should do all Mohinder scenes (whether in India or NY) in Bollywood style. That would make him a LOT more fun! \o/

I'm with you... I'd rather they stayed away from the government agency path. And I also wondered if there was a hint there that Mohinder does have a power. At least he has angst about his sister being 'special'!

Casting spoiler! I think I know it already! ;-) And it is INDEED sweeeeeeet.

God, the thought of CE coming up in new episodes is going to keep me going through the long, cold, bitter Hiro and Hero-less months.

I would kill for his power right about now (g)

I was always a little worried that he might end up just being a slightly flat evil villain character, which it seemed like it was setting up for at the beginning
*nods* It is a great relief actually! And you're right about Elf!Girl. I may be forced to remember her actual name if this keeps up... I was actually intrigued by her backstory too--presumably Mr Bennett helped her with getting her power under control and she feels indebted to him.

Mr. Bennet totally rocks! I love that they have such grey characters on the show. His concern for his daughter is so real and touching and well, he's a father, of course he will do anything in his power to save her.

Finally we get to see some character development on Mo! I was glad. And then confused. Mira is weird. If she's like Indian!Eden then why would she ask him to keep his father's work under lock&key? Wouldn't she want to get all the info out of him instead? I think it's a what we see is what we get situation with her. Because come on Mo already has Eden to fill in the "spy" role he doesn't need another. And guh I neither like Mo/Eden nor Mo/Mira.

I just love Hiro and Ando. And Charlie. And that scene where he yells "I'm sweet!" to Ando who gives him the thumbs up? Oh I totally giggled there. But NO THEY CAN'T KILL ANDO-KUN!!! It just won't be the same without him. Charlie's intellectual powers are so awesome.

I like Audrey more than Matt. I don't know why. But I did like the fact that he was trying to connect with Ted to find out what was happening to both of them.

oh and no Nathan T.T

*nods* Yeah, it's a pity! Mo needs a better ship possibility!

I like Audrey better than Matt too I think.

No Nathan, no. And yet I still loved the ep! Fingers crossed for Nathan in the next ep!
