I was so chicken to watch this ep that I a) got drunk and b) roped in a friend for moral support. She had never seen an episode of BSG before. I figured some objectivity was required in this matter. I gave her the briefest of brief rundowns on the show and showed her dualbunny's If God is a DJ vid, which was possibly a mistake, since she developed the biggest crush on Kara EVA. (Memo to self: do not show dykes that vid!) Then I showed her laurasha's Lee vid, with running explanatory commentary from me--Lee needs a frak-load more explanation than Kara--and she was somewhat less impressed but agreed to make sympathetic noises at appropriate moments, and so we began...
I have to say that my coping mechanisms worked for me because by the time it was over I loved this episode SO MUCH. Yes, it tore my heart out and I sobbed through Lee's waking-up-and-finding-Kara-married sequence, but my friend tugged my arm and pointed out her smile of relief in his arms at the end, and awwwwwwww I love them, I love them SO MUCH!!
It's going to take me a while to come down off the high of this ep, so I'm not going to attempt serious meta--I'm all squee. There were several small things that pinged wrongly with me about the ep, but I really can't be bothered nitpicking an ep that gave me, well, pretty much everything I'd ever wanted for them. It actually did explain the rift! Kara took the whole 'leave before they wake the next day thing' to an extreme I personally have never seen before: 'get married before they stagger back into town'. WOW. Even my friend who couldn't care less about the show gasped at that one! (Also, amusingly she couldn't tell the difference between Lee and Anders so there was lots of confusing moments--'but we saw them having sex BEFORE!' 'no, no, that was her husband ...')
I'm still reeling from the fact that BOTH marriages were marred by lies and repressed emotion from the start. I mean, that had been implied, but I honestly wouldn't have guessed the causal relationship between Kara and Lee sleeping together and Kara's marriage to Anders. She could have been lying when she told Lee she wasn't actually going to marry Anders, but it seems more likely that she married him to put the firmest of walls up between her and Lee. And Lee doesn't seem to love Dualla sincerely at all... no wonder he ate himself into a stupor! I'd find that more distasteful if I didn't find Dee such a waste of space. At least Anders had the good sense to walk away at the end--she just stood there gaping. But is she actually going to say anything to him about it? Clearly she knows how the emotional landscape lies--and while I'm sure they did grow closer in their marriage, and Lee did appreciate her love and support (ick!), what the hell was she getting out of it? Why did she settle like this? *baffled*
Anyway, enough with Dee. My little Lee-oriented heart was shocked but delighted that Kara yelled that she loved him. I seriously didn't expect her to--I had my head in my hands through that scene, saying 'oh, no, Lee! don't do this to yourself! don't DO this!' But wow! She really did it! And ok she was drunk and euphoric and had the giggles and got married the next day despite it, but it still means something. (Yes, I'm aware how ridiculous that sentence sounds, but this is Kara Thrace we're talking about! ;-) ) For once, I'm not actually ringing supacat up to get an explanation of Kara's behaviour. It was incredibly Kara-like to disappear in the morning, and that scene where Lee walks back into town and his father tells him they're married and then he sees them and she looks him in the eye and says it was her idea..... ahhhugggghhhh! daggers through my heart! eeek!
Ok, the boxing match was SO HOT! I loved the construction of the episode around it and the fact that it was a way of triggering catharsis on personal grudges. I love that Kara went there to pick a fight with Lee. I love that she frakked Sam (poor Sam!) beforehand. I love that Lee and Helo also fought a round (though I personally wish Helo had lost that fight, since he's already got away with so much that will cost humanity...). I love that Roslin got in the ring and gave Adama advice in his fight (hee! she was so cute-hot and out-of-place-looking with those glasses too!). I love that Kara would not leave before she got Lee in the ring, and that she wanted a fight and a hard fight and he could actually give her that (thank god for that diet!). I laughed so hard when Hotdog challenged Starbuck--come ON! She flattened him in seconds, of course.
But ohhhh my pilots!! Awwwwwwwwww!
I loved that we got to see both of them flashing back to what had happened--confirmation that its affected both of them deeply. And I also felt it came at the right time for Kara--she's fought to get past her experience with Leoben and subsequent rebellion. She's got herself back on track but is repressing like crazy. She's fighting again, and the person that most challenges her, that can give her back her self-identity the most is Lee. It had to be her to press for the fight at this point in time--Lee had had the door slammed in his face with such finality he would never have tried knocking on it again. But I was proud of him for being the one to make a move on her on the planet--ok, it was his last chance before he lost her, but at least he did it! I honestly thought after Scar that he'd be too scared to try again. Oh, and the dear boy looked like he'd died and gone to heaven when they were having sex, which, really, with Kara Thrace on top of you, is just how you should look. Awwwww pilots!!
Yes, yes, laugh away! Mock! Go on! I know this show will snatch away the happy any second now, but I'm going to cling to that last lingering hug (how hilarious that everyone slowly exited the room as they just kept on clinging to one another!) as long as I can.
And I'm going to have to have another eight cold showers before I have a brain again. GUH!
Small things I also squeed over:
- Sam saying 'maybe I'm not what you really wanted'
- 'get your boots on the way out, Sammy!'
- Kara muttering 'come on!' to Lee when he fell in the ring
- Lee getting his pissy bitch mode on in contesting Karl's win over him
- Kara dropping her tags in the tray over Lee's shoulder, so he turns and their faces are only a couple of inches apart when he tells her she's biting off more than she can chew (I miss their faces a couple of inches apart!)
- the juxtaposition of Laura and Bill flirting with Lee and Kara flirting (even if that did mean we had to see that lame dress of Laura's and that terrible moustache...)
- Kara drinking Anders under the table
- Kara's coded baiting of Lee about his father knowing when to make his moves or hold back
- Kara grinning when she got her fight
- Sam: 'Looks like they're trying to kill each other'/Dee: (wryly) 'That's one perspective'
- Lee nearly vomitting on the news that Kara got married
- flashback to the mini-series!
- Kara's smile at the end (I mentioned that, right?! ;-) )
