BSG 3.10 Unfinished Business
Ok, come and laugh at Boppy! It'll be fun!!

I was so chicken to watch this ep that I a) got drunk and b) roped in a friend for moral support. She had never seen an episode of BSG before. I figured some objectivity was required in this matter. I gave her the briefest of brief rundowns on the show and showed her dualbunny's If God is a DJ vid, which was possibly a mistake, since she developed the biggest crush on Kara EVA. (Memo to self: do not show dykes that vid!) Then I showed her laurasha's Lee vid, with running explanatory commentary from me--Lee needs a frak-load more explanation than Kara--and she was somewhat less impressed but agreed to make sympathetic noises at appropriate moments, and so we began...

I have to say that my coping mechanisms worked for me because by the time it was over I loved this episode SO MUCH. Yes, it tore my heart out and I sobbed through Lee's waking-up-and-finding-Kara-married sequence, but my friend tugged my arm and pointed out her smile of relief in his arms at the end, and awwwwwwww I love them, I love them SO MUCH!!

It's going to take me a while to come down off the high of this ep, so I'm not going to attempt serious meta--I'm all squee. There were several small things that pinged wrongly with me about the ep, but I really can't be bothered nitpicking an ep that gave me, well, pretty much everything I'd ever wanted for them. It actually did explain the rift! Kara took the whole 'leave before they wake the next day thing' to an extreme I personally have never seen before: 'get married before they stagger back into town'. WOW. Even my friend who couldn't care less about the show gasped at that one! (Also, amusingly she couldn't tell the difference between Lee and Anders so there was lots of confusing moments--'but we saw them having sex BEFORE!' 'no, no, that was her husband ...')

I'm still reeling from the fact that BOTH marriages were marred by lies and repressed emotion from the start. I mean, that had been implied, but I honestly wouldn't have guessed the causal relationship between Kara and Lee sleeping together and Kara's marriage to Anders. She could have been lying when she told Lee she wasn't actually going to marry Anders, but it seems more likely that she married him to put the firmest of walls up between her and Lee. And Lee doesn't seem to love Dualla sincerely at all... no wonder he ate himself into a stupor! I'd find that more distasteful if I didn't find Dee such a waste of space. At least Anders had the good sense to walk away at the end--she just stood there gaping. But is she actually going to say anything to him about it? Clearly she knows how the emotional landscape lies--and while I'm sure they did grow closer in their marriage, and Lee did appreciate her love and support (ick!), what the hell was she getting out of it? Why did she settle like this? *baffled*

Anyway, enough with Dee. My little Lee-oriented heart was shocked but delighted that Kara yelled that she loved him. I seriously didn't expect her to--I had my head in my hands through that scene, saying 'oh, no, Lee! don't do this to yourself! don't DO this!' But wow! She really did it! And ok she was drunk and euphoric and had the giggles and got married the next day despite it, but it still means something. (Yes, I'm aware how ridiculous that sentence sounds, but this is Kara Thrace we're talking about! ;-) ) For once, I'm not actually ringing supacat up to get an explanation of Kara's behaviour. It was incredibly Kara-like to disappear in the morning, and that scene where Lee walks back into town and his father tells him they're married and then he sees them and she looks him in the eye and says it was her idea..... ahhhugggghhhh! daggers through my heart! eeek!

Ok, the boxing match was SO HOT! I loved the construction of the episode around it and the fact that it was a way of triggering catharsis on personal grudges. I love that Kara went there to pick a fight with Lee. I love that she frakked Sam (poor Sam!) beforehand. I love that Lee and Helo also fought a round (though I personally wish Helo had lost that fight, since he's already got away with so much that will cost humanity...). I love that Roslin got in the ring and gave Adama advice in his fight (hee! she was so cute-hot and out-of-place-looking with those glasses too!). I love that Kara would not leave before she got Lee in the ring, and that she wanted a fight and a hard fight and he could actually give her that (thank god for that diet!). I laughed so hard when Hotdog challenged Starbuck--come ON! She flattened him in seconds, of course.

But ohhhh my pilots!! Awwwwwwwwww!

I loved that we got to see both of them flashing back to what had happened--confirmation that its affected both of them deeply. And I also felt it came at the right time for Kara--she's fought to get past her experience with Leoben and subsequent rebellion. She's got herself back on track but is repressing like crazy. She's fighting again, and the person that most challenges her, that can give her back her self-identity the most is Lee. It had to be her to press for the fight at this point in time--Lee had had the door slammed in his face with such finality he would never have tried knocking on it again. But I was proud of him for being the one to make a move on her on the planet--ok, it was his last chance before he lost her, but at least he did it! I honestly thought after Scar that he'd be too scared to try again. Oh, and the dear boy looked like he'd died and gone to heaven when they were having sex, which, really, with Kara Thrace on top of you, is just how you should look. Awwwww pilots!!

Yes, yes, laugh away! Mock! Go on! I know this show will snatch away the happy any second now, but I'm going to cling to that last lingering hug (how hilarious that everyone slowly exited the room as they just kept on clinging to one another!) as long as I can.

And I'm going to have to have another eight cold showers before I have a brain again. GUH!

Small things I also squeed over:
- Sam saying 'maybe I'm not what you really wanted'
- 'get your boots on the way out, Sammy!'
- Kara muttering 'come on!' to Lee when he fell in the ring
- Lee getting his pissy bitch mode on in contesting Karl's win over him
- Kara dropping her tags in the tray over Lee's shoulder, so he turns and their faces are only a couple of inches apart when he tells her she's biting off more than she can chew (I miss their faces a couple of inches apart!)
- the juxtaposition of Laura and Bill flirting with Lee and Kara flirting (even if that did mean we had to see that lame dress of Laura's and that terrible moustache...)
- Kara drinking Anders under the table
- Kara's coded baiting of Lee about his father knowing when to make his moves or hold back
- Kara grinning when she got her fight
- Sam: 'Looks like they're trying to kill each other'/Dee: (wryly) 'That's one perspective'
- Lee nearly vomitting on the news that Kara got married
- flashback to the mini-series!
- Kara's smile at the end (I mentioned that, right?! ;-) )

It was soooo gooood!!!

As much as I loved the Lee/Kara storyline, I was *squeeing* over Adama and Roslin in the flashbacks on the planet. I thought that was beautifully done by the both of them.

Awwww yeah they were awesome too! Lee/Kara eclipsed them on my first watch, but I'm going to go back and rewatch for the Adama/Roslin, because they're an awesome couple. I loved her ringside with him--she's so cute! And them staring at the stars together was gorgeous...
The First Evilasta77 on December 3rd, 2006 03:37 pm (UTC)
The only person I had complete sympathy for was Anders since he was really clueless about everything. Even if Lee didn't confess he slept with Kara, Dee had to have known she was second choice and I don't have a lot of respect for her marrying him knowing that. Did she want him that badly? Did she feel she could make him get over Kara? I think that may have been the reason for her devestated look at the end, not that he has feelings for Kara but that those feelings have been a part of their marriage this entire time. My vote right now is everyone split with each other and spend time working on your own baggage beore entering into another relationship.

I completely concur, though I suspect that everyone (and this show) is waaay too frakked up for so healthy a choice!! I agree that Anders was pretty much the only character who I had complete sympathy for--everyone else's behaviour was at least mildly distasteful. Poor Sam! I was pleased he cleared out at the end, because seriously you don't need your nose rubbed in that stuff. He seems the most well-adjusted of all four too. I hope we see him again in a 'getting on with my life positively' scenario.

*I* know that if Kara didn't really *feel* that for Lee, she wouldn't have said it.
*beams* This Lee/Kara shipper is very very happy!

The Laura/Bill-ness of this episode delighted me as much as the Lee/Kara-ness. I lllllove Roslin/Adama. It's like Mama and Papa Bear and it makes me squee.
They were brilliant! I'm starting to ship them just because they were so damn cute in this ep. In fact, they deserve a rewatch of this ep just for them. (Except I've already tried that and yet again got distracted by the angsty hot of L/K...) Still, they are gorgeous!

made it finally possible for me to just forget about the nitpicks that would have otherwise driven me up a wall about the episode
Ha! Yes, I had them too. I had them, but they were eclipsed.

The "I miss you" declarations were *entirely made of win*.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! *still high*
I love that Lee's first attempt to reply resulted in: 'Ahhmisshhhhh' *splutters blood*
Heeeeee!!

And here I thought I was the only sap crying at the end because the whispered "I missed you," was just so.....guh, Sob-worthy. This is my favorite ep to date. (Also, I didn't realize how much I missed the Lee/Kara as well. I've been too busy shipping A/R! :) )

I sobbed like a child. Seriously, my friend who watched with me started fluttering around me, patting my back hesitantly and saying 'oh no! oh no! what do I do?!!' Me hopeless. ;-)

I think this ep was my final conversion to A/R. I've found them mildly cute in the past, but this ep really really brought home the adorable shippyness of them.

YES YES! I saw it! (I was coming here soon, I just had to catch up with comments :P)

And, OMG, Boppy! This was like... I can't even say how much I loved this episode. With the structure and the whole set up, and the SEX - yeah, out in the middle of the field, but also up there in the boxing ring. Sex all over the place! *FLAILS*

Roslin/Adama? SO MUCH LOVE. They were so sweet and quietly in love and I adore them endlessly. *FLAILS MORE*

Dee with her "that's one perspective" just freakin' slayed me. Such a great line.

And lastly, ok. Yes. LEE/KARA4EVAOMG! Seriously, that was so freaking sexy between the two of them. Christ. (although, the minute Leoben comes back, I am totally taking that back. *g*)

They were SO CUUUTE! I also thought Roslin was looking very cute ringside--she's such a spunk! And I'm completely converted to shipping them.

Yay! *twirls you* I thought the days of their hotness were past... I thought Ron Moore had bought a machine gun to gun down all Kara/Lee shippers... I thought you'd never know their glory... But I was wrong! YAY!

Oh, totally! Hey, like I can talk... I jumped ship while he was around! We must get the HOT where we can!

But meanwhile, I am happy because you can see why I ship Lee/Kara! *treasures my pilots*

Like whoa. They are the epitome of sexual tension and heat. *fans self* Was it you or someone on your flist that was talking about BSG and the reversal of gender roles? Because I love that he is all sappy and going for the whole symbolic gesture, and she is (or pretends to be) tough as nails. LOVE. Also, I dunno, but I really got why she ran to Anders. I see a bit of myself in her.
K, Bop or Boppy--take your pick!: Kara/Lee dreamybop_radar on December 3rd, 2006 10:29 pm (UTC)
Not sure--could have been me! I've talked about that at some stage...

Lee is SO the 'girl' in the relationship! He's such a cutie. He's a total sap--to the max, where Kara is concerned. For him there was absolutely no question after they had sex that they would be together. He wears his heart on his sleeve, he adores her, he would die for her.

And Kara's so tough--she sublimates her emotions in a traditionally male way. The friend I watched with exclaimed 'OMG! Has she never heard of afterglow?!' and I had to giggle. I don't think Kara's ever let herself feel afterglow.

The last time they tried to get it on, Lee was all 'slow down! slow down! I want to savour the transcendent moment!' and Kara was 'omg, you have got to be kidding! I just want a good frak, already!' It broke my heart at the time, but was also damn cute.

So yes, the gender roles are reversed, but I'm also glad that it's more subtle than that. Lee's got other aspects of himself that are very masculine, just as Kara has a very feminine side too. I loves them.

I really got why she ran to Anders. I see a bit of myself in her.
Oddly I do too! I say 'oddly' because usually I require supacat to explain Kara to me. But in this case, I understand the freak out. When she turned to him after screaming out her love (which was a HUUUUUGE thing for Kara to do!) she looked so hopeful but then her expression quickly turned all terrified/awestruck. I said to my friend 'oh no! she's got angst face!' And when she woke in the morning, I get that she freaked. She was way more comfortable with it being just a dream or just a hazy memory... I love that it haunted her anyway--when she flashed back to waking up with him while watching him box Helo, I just about died. We so rarely get proof that Kara thinks about Lee.

Oh, that scene where she confronted him about the marriage! She looked so in pain! She had do know she was tearing his heart out. And given that she loves him... aieeeee!!! That's why I love love love that it was Kara that said she missed Lee first. She just had to get close enough first... and the only way she knew was to fight him to a standstill. Literally!

I'm still giggling that their boxing match ended in huggles!

Oh, yes, yes. That's what makes them so real to me! They are not stereotypical at all. They have layers, Boppy! YAY!

Oh, that scene where she confronted him about the marriage! She looked so in pain!

I was almost in TEARS during that scene *is an easy crier* because of her facial expression. And his, too. But I hurt so much for her.

You know, that screaming-out-their-love-for-each-other scene could have been so trite and cheesy, but it wasn't at all! That, right there? It gets me. Totally wins me over to the acting, the writing, and the ship. *loves*

Almost in tears?! I was sobbing! Big choking sobs. I think I nearly vomited, a la Lee! I pretty much live and breathe as Lee when watching BSG--when he hurts, I hurt. I don't know why--I think this is the most extreme attachment to a fictional character I've ever had--on TV anyway. I don't exactly fangirl him--I am him. *iz weird* But even Lee-oriented moi bled for Kara in that scene--I think it also helped that they showed it twice--so I had time to move in and out of perspectives.

that screaming-out-their-love-for-each-other scene could have been so trite and cheesy, but it wasn't at all! That, right there? It gets me. Totally wins me over to the acting, the writing, and the ship. *loves*
Oh, yes, I know!! It could have been AWFUL. But they spark off each other so well and they made it feel so real. And that little high pitched squeak that Kara made after she yelled it charmed me sooo much. As did Lee's face--you can see him dying of happy that his girl's finally said it!

On paper many of their romantic moments have been potentially terribly trite, and I don't consider myself romantic at all, but they totally sucker me ever time... They make of Boppy one big puddle of goo! I want a happy ending, for them!!

I MISSS YOUUUU!!!!

:-) I watch with a friend who has a similar attachment to Kara. Until we articulated what was going on, it caused a fair degree of tension between us--we read all their scenes together differently. Now we check in with each other after eps and get the other's pov, and it works. But it's also... odd.

I think the gender role reversal is what kept me from seeing that I was identifying with him completely
Yup! I sympathise. I was kind of apologetic about the fact I was identifying with him heavily for ages. I still find it a little odd, but the gender reversal IS so major, so now I understand why. I had my own little epiphany forced on me the night I dreamt as him.

No doubt it is abnormal, this connection to a fictional character, but I can't control it (other than abstaining totally from watching the show--and as if I'm going to do that?!!). Frankly I'm relieved to hear that I'm not alone!!

And ::hugs:: from a fellow Lee-perspective-er, because it can be ouchy as hell being Lee! ::hugs::
